Work goes on!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Some nice progress on the lower right wing is being accomplished thanks to the hard work of Matt and Karl. The ribs leading edges have all been marked and cut to size, and the routed wood leading edge has been fit into place, looks very nice. The landing gear final adjustments are being made along with the axle. The elevator, and rudder have been cleaned, coated with zinc-chromate and are being prepared for covering on next friday. We have designated next friday as the covering day so that past, as well as present Nieuport volunteers can collaborate together in this achievement.

Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Work continues on the strutter, as always a shortage of helping hands. We are building ribs for the stabilizer, only have to build 10 of them. We have been practicing making the leading edge, it is a bulb shape and is not available anywhere so we are fabricating our own. We had special moulder knives made for these pieces. We will post a picture when we are finished. Besides the leading edge we are also fabricating router jigs to profile and lighten the fwd stabilizer spar.
If the weather cooperates we will take the Rotec out for a run tomorrow.

Some exciting progress!

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Things are starting to pick up again on the Nieuport 11 project. Steve Barrick and Mark Overpeck have been making progress with the landing gear. The landing gear is assembled, and temporarily aligned, waiting on engine mount before we can make final attatchments. Accessories to landing gear are being built, and will soon be installed. Brake assemblies are here, and will also be attatched very soon. Matt Sundstrom and Carl Hudson have been diligently working on the lower right wing, have dry-fit the ribs to the spar, and have been fabricating the false ribs as well. Monday they plan on fabricating the main wing ribs as well. All lower wing ribs are done, waiting on the false ribs to be finished as well. Steve Baucum has preassembled the engine to the frame to ensure all parts are accounted for, which they are. The engine has been preserved until assembly, and will be awaiting the arrival of the mount. So far, a productive past couple of weeks! One more thing, our January graduating class was very proud to show a static display of the Nieuport 11 during graduation, pics are on display! Congrats to all graduates!
