Started oil tank for the Nieuport 24

Friday, February 27th, 2009

We are continuing to work the fuel tank this week. Some more welding has been done but now the fittings need to be researched and ordered. Marty Meggs has started on the process of making the oil tank. He has cut some metal and is checking the measurements. Pete Largarski and Anna Brown are also working on the ribs. Exciting events happen at our school and one of them this last weekend. We hosted the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Workshop and one of our students, Joseph “Blake” Barnet received a $500.00 scholarship from the EAA. All the aviation enthusiasts enjoyed the workshops. Classes on composites, electrical, sheetmetal and dope/fabric were held here. Everyone was happy for “Blake” to receive this award from the EAA because “Blake” has worked very hard on the Nieuport 24 aircraft we are building. Congratulations “Blake”!     Please click on all pictures to enlarge.

100_1976

Well after spending alot of time between Fri, Sat, and Sun we have managed to bring our frame into 3-D. There is still a lot of work that needs to be performed before it is ready to get its nice protective coating. This week we are looking to spend our time working on stress points and finishing up the fabrication of gussets.

Ignition Switch for the Rotec

Friday, February 20th, 2009

We had to remove the original ignition switch we installed for the Nieuport 24 electrical panel. The magnetos on this engine require 12 volts going to the coil. It is more like an automotive system then an aircraft system which is an independent system.  We still have to install two switches for the left and right magnetos. These switches will be installed just above the ignition switch. Please click on all pictures to enlarge.

Indy

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

We are making some big progress at Indy, we received our flight instruments yesterday and have Burke who graduated from Alanta’s avionics course working hard to get them ready for install. This week we are trying to get our rib jig finished and the first set of ribs capped and glued. If it goes as I have planned out, we should see the left wing ribed and have its swept-back blocks installed. However, as my old First Sergeant use to say, “If anything ever goes as planned, something is wrong.” Our team hats and shirts have arrived so that boosted moral a bit with the team.
We recieved our dead line. (chime in the tension music). September 25 their will be a Air show out at Dayton, OH and we have recieved a fax asking if our BEBE’ N-11 will be ready by then. So to answer MR. Yagen, (and this is coming from the Student Project Manager Jason Meadows) Yes, she will be there ready to fly….

Many more small parts are being made, mostly for the pilot flight control pieces. We have started working on the tail trimming device. The Strutter was supposedly the first fighter aircraft to have a trimmable tail. The unit consists of a jackscrew and a housing, it will be a real challenge to build.

In the top row of pictures the fuel tank is placed in the Nieuport 24. Here you can see approximate location of the fuel tank and some shots from different angels.

Blake Barnett is in the process of looking at the next piece for the fuel tank in the first picture bottom row and in the last frame we have installed some fuel system components. Please click on all thumbnails to enlarge.

07FEB09 again saw a 8 hour day on the Nieuport. PM Jason Meadows and APM Bill McMahan both worked diligently to get as much done of the frame. Help was given by Tom Perrow and Will William. Eric Shaw was busy in the background working on the jig that will help us cap 18 ribs at a time. At the end of the day we all thought it would be a good idea to have funny photo time.
