Nieuport 24 Summary 2008

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

This last year we made some good progress with our Nieuport 24 aircraft. Students volunteered many hours this year as they did the year before. Since we started tracking the student’s hours (April 2007) we have now accumulated 1,378.8  hours to date with an average of 65.65 hours per mouth for the last 21 mouths and for every hour a student is working the Nieuport 24 a certified A&P is with them so realistically the total man-hours would be slightly higher.

Some of the items we succeeded on this last year are the landing gear, brakes, rudder pedals, bungee cord, firewall, top and side formers (not all installed), instrument panel, battery, electrical panel, seat, cables, flight control connections, hinge collars, steel straps, bushings, support plates, gun block, control stick installation, torque tube, ribs, cap strips, throttle, lower wing spar support (needs welding), aileron push tubes, carburetor heat, ignition modules, coils, and Powerplant installation. The students who worked this project last year overcame a lot of learning curves that they definitely will carry with them the rest of their careers.

Please click on the pictures below to see the progress made this year and/or click on Team Chesapeake under Categories to see all detail postings for the year.

Thank you to all involved this year!

Wires,Coil, Ignition Module, Nieuport 24

Friday, December 19th, 2008

This last week more wires were routed and Anna and Blake are checking the installation. What is important in installing wires and clamps is that a wire is not pinched between the metal or chaffing action will remove the protective coating on the wire and cause a malfunction of a component or a fatal accident. Please see pictures of clamping wires correctly.

In the other two pictures please see the placement of the coils, ignition modules and notice more work done on the carburetor heat system. Please enlarge pictures by clicking on then, thank you.

Spar,Cables and more Carb heat work.

Friday, December 12th, 2008

This last week we had a visit from our local newspaper. A reporter and a photographer came to our school to do an article about our WW1 Nieuport 24 student project. In the first two pictures you can see them talking to our students  and also to one of our A&P Instructors, Mr. Joe Eggers who is our Project Manager with the bright blue shirt. In the third picture students are running a wing spar into the wood plainer.

The bottom row Anna is mixing adhesive to use in the adhering the cap strips to the ribs and in the last two pictures some electrical cables have been installed and more work on the carburetor heat system. Please enlarge all pictures by clicking on them, thank you.

In the last picture Pete Legarski, Ryan Palmen and Greg Lord sitting in the cockpit area are installing the electrical side panel that you saw in our last weeks blog.

Some new wood

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Today at Indy, we recieved another shipment of plywood because the last order was bad. Hopefully we can get the cut outs that we need tomorrow (Saturday) and press on from there. Not much work was done today. Me and my fellow students passed our block last night and went out to celebrate and took most of today off. I was able to cut out some more frame tubing and prepped it so it can be welded on. On the funnier side of things, our instructor Jeannie Velez lost her earring and I ended up finding it in a pile of sawdust. I think she needs to use some safety wire to keep it attached. :)
