Nieuport 24 Aircraft Log

Friday, September 26th, 2008

A couple of weeks ago we posted the first picture and we mentioned more work needed to be done to the tubes. The support tubes have been cut and additional parts have been tack welded on to support the connection of flight control cables. These cables run down the entire fuselage to control the rudder. In the process of building this aircraft we have learned that we should cut everything longer than what the plans say and trim it down to proper length once we get it tack welded in the correct position. The last picture in the top row shows the cable support bracket for the tail wheel before it is installed.

In the middle set of pictures we have the rudder stops and a couple pictures of the area they along with the tail wheel cable bracket will be installed.

The last row of pictures we have installed the items in place. Please see the front and back snapshots. The last picture has Anna Brown and Edward Villanuera doing some much needed work on the Nieuport 24 project. Please enlare pictures by clicking on them, thank you.

Testing the spar

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Today we took a section of the spar that was cut off and subjected it to various testing. The objective was to see if the resin mixture “glue” would hold to standards. The test passed with flying colors showing the wood failed before the resin did. Good job wing crew.

Edward Villanueva retired from the Navy and is currently employed as an emergency Physician Assistance at a local hospital. Just like his Navy commitment as a hospital Corpsman Edward still flies in a helicopter to get where his skills are needed but now it is in a civilian helicopter. He started loving aviation during his days in the Navy and now he said he wants to get his Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate. A lot of his friends own airplanes and have their A&P certificates and showed Edward an advertisement in the local newspaper which brought Edward to our school. He said he likes all the information he is getting in class and enjoys working with his hands, which is why he volunteers to help build this WW1 Nieuport 24 aircraft.

In the next set of three pictures you will see we added the support tubes for the stabilizer and finished manufacturing the attachment/bushings to secure the rudder in place. Please enlarge all pictures by clicking on them. Thank you.

Next week we are working on the rudder stops, fuel tank and other items.

Avoid a dead-end job, enroll in our school now.

Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Friday work day went well, more welding on the tabs for the formers. Set up the wood working tools for the center section spars and the main spars. Will start cutting and routing out these pieces soon. Our firewall is being riveted and then it will be mounted to determine engine accessory positions. Small pieces are continuing to be made. We are recruiting new students to help as a majority of our long term Sopwith builders have graduated. This week we are performing the storage procedures on our Rotec engine. The local EAA chapter will be having a tour of the Sopwith project and the school soon. There is a lot of local interest in this aircraft project.
