With the start of a new mod I find today I have 7 new students who started last Monday ready to work. We started by going to the museum down the street to see the Pup they have on display. Then spent time with the plans understanding what they were dealing with.

Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter
Monday, August 25th, 2008Work continues on the Strutter. The firewall looks real good, we are riviting the ring together this week. Work continues on the landing gear mount area. hope to be welding this week and mounting the gear soon. The EAA’s 1929 Ford Trimotor came in on Thursday and we had to take some time and make room for it in the hangar. It will be here all weekend selling rides. Last year many of our students took the 20 minute ride, some of the students had never been up in an airplane before. Hopefully a few will get to ride this year.

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008The work on the Nieuport this week is moving along. Some items we are still addressing are the brakes, making the rudder pedals just right and doing some necessary work on the wing. In the top two pictures Anna Brown is with Instructor Joe Eggers and looking at the placement of the brakes. In the next picture student Ryan Palelman is doing his log book entry and Mr. Eggers is looking over work plans. Each student that volunteers to help in this student project receives an aircraft log book they can use to document the work they have accomplished on the Nieuport 24. In this log book Mr. Eggers checks the log entry and records the volunteer time a student spends. A couple of blogs ago we pictured Anna Brown doing some measuring in the wing. Some people have asked the question what exactly she is measuring so close. It is those little corner pieces she was measuring and installing. Please look at the one picture and you will see how one corner piece on the right is not installed and the one on the left is.
Please enlarge all pictures by clicking on them. Thank you.

Friday, August 22nd, 2008Now Thats Progress
Friday, August 22nd, 2008Work Continues for Team Kansas City
Friday, August 22nd, 2008We are still working on the wing. Holes have been drilled for the torque tubes for the ailerons and now we are making sure that when the fabric is put on the wings that we will have nice smooth contours. The picture below shows one side of the wing and where the clamps are, that is where the fabric will stop and the ailerons will be installed. So many little details, it is hard to show all the progress we are making.
Hopefully, next week we will have most of the wing done and ready for covering.
Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter
Tuesday, August 19th, 2008A busy Friday. Joseph Pham
our student welder was able to get the landing gear legs welded together. This week we are designing the gear leg attach points for the fuselage. Would like to get the aircraft on it’s gear this month. We also have started fabricating the firewall. The first piece of the firewall was cut out and temporarily attached to the airframe. Other students continued on attaching the formers to the fuselage. We have finished the wooden structure around the observer/gunners seat area. Jason Carrig one of our sheet metal instructors with the help of his students has been fabricating the pilot seat out of aluminum, it should be completed soon.
